Salt Lake County Senior Care Cost Decoder
When a loved one needs care, a starting price is only part of the answer. Add up the written quote, see which costs still need an answer, and take a clear checklist to your next conversation.
An itemized cost calculator
Use a community's written amounts. Unknown fees stay visible instead of becoming a misleading total.
A checklist for a hospital discharge
Organize questions for the discharge team, the care community and the insurer when decisions feel urgent.
Official Utah resources
Look up licensing history and contact the right Medicaid waiver program before relying on coverage.
Calculate your written quote
Enter the amounts a community confirms. Leave unknown charges blank; enter 0 for a charge confirmed as included. These entries stay in this page, are not sent to Haven, and are not saved by Haven. Use Clear or reload to erase them. Print to keep a copy.
Known monthly subtotal: $0.00 — incomplete
Confirm 5 remaining monthly charges before comparing this total.
- First month including one-time fees:
- Needs confirmed monthly and one-time amounts
- First year at unchanged monthly rates:
- Needs confirmed monthly and one-time amounts
- Next-year monthly scenario:

Totals cover only the lines you enter. Care needs, discounts, refunds, rate-change dates and contract terms can change the actual bill.

Your quote stays with you
Calculator entries stay in this page. They are not included if you submit the separate help form.
Clear cost sources
Survey inputs, modeled estimates and community quotes are identified separately so you can judge what each can tell you.
What to ask before accepting a starting price
Request a dated, itemized quote for your relative's assessed care needs. Unknown fees are left blank rather than estimated as zero. Salt Lake City model figures are planning context, not a survey of Salt Lake County communities.
| Cost line | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Base rent and services | Get a dated quote Ask which room, meals, utilities and services the base amount includes. |
| Care-level or points charge | After the care assessment Ask how the assessment changes the bill and when it is repeated. |
| Medication management | Ask if included Separate routine administration, pharmacy costs and other medication services. |
| Supplies, escorts and transport | Ask if included Request each recurring fee; record 0 only when confirmed as included. |
| One-time move-in fees | Get refund terms Separate nonrefundable charges from deposits; ask what happens if the stay ends early. |
| Rate changes | Get the policy in writing Ask which lines may rise, the notice period and the actual increases in recent years. |
Assisted-living planning estimate
A Haven model is not a current community quote or a survey of Salt Lake County. It is not added to your calculator entries.
$3,820–$5,980 / month; modeled midpoint $4,780.
Salt Lake City metro estimate. 2024–2026 published survey medians, state median adjusted to local Salt Lake City prices (BEA regional price parities). Request a quote for exact pricing.
The model uses the 2024 Utah assisted-living survey input, adjusted using the 2024 BEA metro/state price ratio. Displayed bands are planning bounds chosen by Haven, not a survey minimum/maximum or confidence interval. For memory care, use the community's assessed written quote rather than treating this assisted-living estimate as a starting price.
- CareScout 2024 state survey — assisted living: July–December 2024 survey, published March 2025. Utah statewide input; not a Salt Lake County quote.
- BEA regional price parities: Haven adjusts state survey inputs using 2024 metro/state all-items price ratios. This consumer index is not a senior-care price survey.
Utah licensing, benefits and coverage resources
- Utah DHHS — find a licensed facility
Search licensing and available compliance history. Older records may require a GRAMA request.
- Medicare Care Compare — nursing homes
Use for Medicare/Medicaid-certified nursing homes. These federal ratings do not rate assisted-living communities.
- Utah Medicaid — New Choices Waiver
Requires an eligible current institutional setting, a minimum stay and nursing-facility level of care. Ask the program whether the current situation qualifies.
- Utah Medicaid — long-term care and waiver programs
Program spaces and eligibility differ. The age-65-or-older Aging Waiver referral begins with the Area Agency on Aging.
- Medicare — long-term care coverage
Medicare does not cover long-term custodial care. Ask the plan about separate covered medical or skilled services.

Common questions
How do I compare assisted-living quotes in Salt Lake County?
Ask each community for a dated, itemized quote after it assesses the same care needs. Record base rent, care-level charges, medications, supplies and other recurring fees, then separate one-time charges and deposits. Use the calculator above; blank amounts remain unknown.
Are the displayed Salt Lake City cost estimates current facility prices?
No. Haven models older state survey inputs using a metro/state price adjustment. The source dates and assumptions are shown below the calculator. The displayed bands are planning bounds chosen by Haven, not actual quotes or a Salt Lake County survey. Confirm current pricing with each community.
Does Medicare cover assisted-living room and board?
Medicare does not cover long-term custodial care. Separate medical or skilled services may have coverage rules. Ask the insurer and discharge team about the specific services and costs in your care plan.
Can a Utah Medicaid waiver help?
It depends on the program, financial and medical eligibility, setting and available enrollment. Ask Utah Medicaid or your Area Agency on Aging to assess the situation. New Choices requires an eligible current institutional setting and minimum stay; it is not a general shortcut for everyone seeking assisted living.
Do I need to give Haven my email or phone number?
No. The calculator and printable checklist are free without registration. Quote amounts stay in the page and are not saved by Haven. Use Clear or reload to erase them. If you want personal help, the separate optional inquiry form explains contact consent and asks for your preferred contact method.
Can Haven arrange a placement within 72 hours?
This checklist helps organize an urgent discharge conversation; it does not guarantee a bed, admission, coverage or a response time. Work directly with the treating and discharge teams to confirm a setting that can meet the care plan.
Haven's family tools are free. Participating communities may pay Haven a placement fee. Read how Haven works before requesting help. For a time-sensitive discharge, contact your hospital team and the community directly.
